MW4 DMZ guide: how the extraction mode works

DMZ is Modern Warfare 4's extraction mode. You prepare at your Forward Operating Base (FOB), deploy into the Hajin Exclusion Zone, and earn DMZ XP and Cash from looting, combat and objectives. You keep your loot only if you reach an exfil before the radiation storm closes in.

Three ways to deploy

Side Ops are smaller tasks inside a deployment: finding lost Supply Drops, repairing trucks, activating UAV Towers or climbing radio towers to reveal where a Lieutenant is. DMZ Orders are the longer-term mission chain that teaches each system and moves the story along.

Threat levels and staying alive

Each point of interest has a threat level, shown under your compass when you enter it. Fighting raises the threat and brings tougher reinforcements. Breaking line of sight, hiding or moving into the countryside brings it back down.

Low Medium High Critical Extreme

Bosses: Lieutenants and Commanders

Lieutenants have their own territories and are tougher than normal enemies. Climbing a Lieutenant Hunt tower reveals roughly where one is. When you kill one you get its weapon and a Dog Tag Case, and it may drop a key to its loot room. Picking up the case shows your position to every Operator on the map, so exfil quickly afterwards. You still get the XP and Cash if you leave the case behind.

Commanders are roaming bosses that ignore many standard weapons. Activision names three: Colossus, Deathstalker and a main NK battle tank. They drop high-value 3D Printer ingredients.

Exfil

Exfil sites, marked by green smoke, rotate from a pool of locations. Call in the helicopter and hold the site until it lands. A Fulton balloon or a Flare also works. Other squads camp exfils, and flares can be seen and heard from far away.

After Action Report and progression

Every deployment ends with a rating from F to S++ based on Objectives, Combat and Looting. Your XP goes toward your DMZ Player Level (1–70), and your Dog Tag levels up through 18 tiers from Steel to Onyx III, with an Operator Trait at each one. To improve your rating, do some of all three rather than only looting.

FAQ

What is DMZ in Modern Warfare 4?

DMZ is the extraction mode in MW4. You deploy into the open-world Hajin Exclusion Zone, loot, complete objectives and fight both AI forces and rival Operators, then try to exfil with what you found.

How do you exfil in DMZ?

Go to an active exfil site, marked by green smoke, call in the extraction helicopter and hold the area until it arrives. You can also exfil with a Fulton balloon or a Flare. Exfil sites attract other squads, and flares are loud and visible from far away.

What happens when the timer runs out?

The HUD timer shows when the radiation storm will intensify across Hajin. As it gets worse, you need to reach an exfil or you will be stuck in an area that is too hostile to survive.

What is the max DMZ level?

DMZ has its own progression track from level 1 to 70. It unlocks FOB stations, 3D Printer recipes and other rewards.
